Getting in the Way of Relaxation: 7 Enemies of Good Rest

You just got back from vacation, but you feel as if you never had a vacation? Unfortunately, it can happen to anyone. And there are at least seven objective reasons for that. Let’s find out what might have prevented your vacation, and most importantly, what to do to avoid recurrence.

Excessive Fatigue

Often the thought of a vacation comes when a person is already too tired, has earned emotional burnout, or is even ready to quit. In such a case, a short vacation will not help. Accumulated overwork is difficult to compensate for in a week.

Try to plan a vacation or a long weekend in advance, with a certain periodicity. For example, at least once a month, arrange a quality weekend vacation, and once every three or four months – a small vacation with a change of scenery.

Calls and Messages from Work

No matter how great the resort is or how free you can breathe at the cottage, all it takes is one call from work to pull you out of your relaxed state. Even if it seems easy to answer your coworkers’ questions about where the file is, it can be a real disaster for a vacation. After all, you need time to get back into a vacation mood, banish work thoughts, and relax. And if there are several such calls or messages in a day?

Try to delegate all cases in advance to those who will replace you. Write letters to partners, and notify them of your absence, so that you have the opportunity to take care of urgent matters before the vacation. Agree with your colleagues and superiors that you won’t stay in touch. If it’s extremely necessary, stipulate a specific hour when you can check emails. The rest of the time, don’t read work chats, don’t look at mail, and don’t answer the phone. Turn off notifications so you’re not tempted to get caught up in work processes.

False Relaxation

Often under the phrase “I need to relax” we mean lying on the couch with the phone, watching soap operas, fast food, and stronger drinks. But you can’t call it relaxing: the wrong static posture, heavy food, and even more so alcohol stress all systems of the body, not relieve stress.

Walks, creativity, sports, meditation, and yoga can truly relax the body and the brain. Try to listen to your body and move as it needs: stretch, stretch stiff muscles, shake your arms and legs, jump or dance. This will help release tension and lift your mood.  

Too Much Information

Endlessly updating your social media feed and monitoring the news while on vacation is a futile exercise that is sure to prevent you from relaxing. This also includes all sorts of courses, marathons, and studies. Give your brain a chance to rest from the abundance of incoming information, do not overload it.

Look around, admire the sunsets and sunrises, watch people, and walk aimlessly. Let the main task for you be to choose an outfit,  play at slot-alaskan-fishing.com/, and cook a delicious meal for dinner.

Excessive Expectations

Expectations and dissatisfaction are also the enemies of a vacation. The wrong view from the room, bad weather, uninteresting excursion, bad choice of hotel, too long road to the sea, and even on steps. Once something doesn’t go according to plan, the brain begins to focus on this and notice the other inconsistencies.

Stop controlling the weather, nature, flying seagulls, mosquitoes, and other uncontrollable things. Don’t expect perfect behavior from your companions – friends, partners, and even more so from your children. Accept everything that doesn’t go according to plan. Excursion canceled? Fine, then go to the sea. Bad weather? Fine, bake a cake and have a tea party.

Restless Thoughts

Phrases about how important it is to be “here and now” have already become memes and jokes. Nevertheless, on vacation, this skill is really important. Worrying about the future, running through your head about the things you have to do when you get back, and berating yourself for wasting time instead of dealing with important issues are sure to ruin your vacation.

Write out all the disturbing thoughts and things to do, put this sheet in your passport and forget it until the end of the vacation. That way you’ll know that all the things to do are fixed, but you won’t endlessly scroll through them in your head.

Inappropriate Type of Vacation

For some people, a vacation is about running around on excursions, and for others, it’s about lies on the beach all day. Of course, you have to choose what you like. However, when it comes to a large family, for example, it’s difficult to please everyone.

Refuse a holiday that doesn’t suit you. No matter how they lure you into the mountains, do not agree if you are not willing to sleep in a tent and walk a lot. If you have to compromise, think about what pleasures you can find on vacation. For example, some go fishing while others are lounging at the spa. Or lie on the beach while culture buffs explore.
